The Hemphill Hornet Bass Club held their first inaugural tournament Saturday, March 22nd, 2013 at Indian Mounds boat ramp.Thirty-Two (32) students fished the tournament. Today, we have an average of 50 students in the club. We hold all of our club tournaments on Toledo Bend (Voted the #1 Bass Lake in the World TWICE in a Row by Bassmaster Magazine!) In 2016, our club affiliated with B.A.S.S and B.A.S.S Nation.
One team, Noah Sowell and Trey Proctor, fished the HS Bassmaster Open on Toledo Bend in June and caught enough fish to qualify to go to the Bassmaster HS Championship on Kentucky Lake in August. They were the only team from Texas!
Nobody could have predicted how this club would evolve into what it is today. High School Fishing has boomed all over the United States. Our students enjoy fishing and look forward to each tournament. We have the best faculty sponsors, Karen Bennett and Nicole Corley, and the best tournament directors, Jeff Manous and Terance Corley who have built the club into what it is today. We love our boat captains which take time out to captain our students! We have many business and community sponsors which make all we do possible. Our students get a free fishing jersey if they fish two tournaments as well as our boat captains, thanks to our sponsors. Our club, with the support of the Toledo Bend Lake Association, has given $1000.00 scholarships each year to each of our qualifiying club seniors!
We have provided fishing equipment and tackle to all of our members through donations and by sponsors and supporters. No student 7th grade-12th grade is turned down for membership. We try to provide a boat and all the student needs to learn how to fish and how to compete.
Our students help out in the community by working big tournament trails that hold tournaments on Toledo Bend, by helping with the Great East Texas Outdoor Fest and other events, as well as community members in need.
We have been fortunate enough to give away 2 boats that were donated. Both were won by students in need of a boat.
