Congratulations 2017 Hornet Graduates! We are very proud of our graduating class and look forward to their many accomplishments to come!
Special thanks to our retiring Hornets for years of outstanding service to our children! Mrs. Greta Woods is retiring from teaching at HES and Mrs. Cindy Ince is retiring after serving as a teacher at HES, HHS and then as a counselor for the Sabine County Shared Services Arrangement. Thank you ladies for the many lives touched and we wish you the very best in retirement!
I am excited to announce that HISD will participating in the CEP breakfast & lunch program which will allow ALL students to eat our regular breakfast and lunch meals at no charge! This program will begin with the 2017-2018 school year this Fall.
Thanks to our campus and district site base members for your diligent work on the campus and district improvement plans. Once the entries from these meetings are complete the plans will be posted on our website.
85th Legislative Session
The 85th session ended pretty much in an educational stalemate. While not much was accomplished to benefit public education, I am proud of our House members for fighting off vouchers once again. The House also tried to improve educational funding by $1.9 billion in HB 21 but the Senate reduced that amount by two-thirds and attached vouchers. The House refused and thus HB 21 died on it’s return trip to the House. I am, however, very disappointed that neither side appropriately addressed the insurance crisis. The state continues to pay $75 per month toward employees’ insurance while costs are skyrocketing. Not only did they not address employee costs for Active Care, they increased employee contributions to cover shortfalls in TRS, the retired teachers’ coverage. You can catch up on all the legislative action HERE. UPDATE June 7: Governor Abbott has decided to extend the 85th Legislative Session into a Special Session beginning July 18. Please let Rep. Paddie and Senator Nichols know your opinions and concerns.
HISD welcomes new Hornets! Dr. Teresa Shaffer will be serving as the Director of Curriculum & Instruction and comes to us from the Houston area. Mrs. Linda McWhorter joins the HES 3rd grade team and also comes to us from the Houston area.
Great things are going on at HISD this summer! We are excited and look forward to the arrival of Dr. Shaffer in July. The Director of C&I will provide a great resource for academics and our faculty. We have an outstanding faculty here at HISD and Dr. Shaffer is looking forward to working with and supporting our efforts. We are also pleased to be looking for a second Ag Science teacher. The program has numbers that support the addition and will also allow us to offer Ag electives to some of our MS students.
It’s that time of the year when we start preparing for the next year. We are completing the removal of old lockers in the MS Science Building and will be painting those walls to match the areas previously addressed. Additionally, cubbies (like those in the HS library hall) will be added for 7th and 8th grade use. We are also replacing the walk-in cooler/freezer in the cafeteria. The degeneration of the insulation in the walls and the break down in the performance of entry doors has created this need. Demo and replacement are scheduled to be completed in July. The HES/HMS library is receiving new carpet due to the instability and performance of the glue previously used which has leaked onto the surface in many areas. The architect, contractor, and manufacturer are working with us to correct the issue and install new, functional carpeting. The summer will also include a lot of mowing/lawn care, power washing, painting, and deep cleaning.
Last Month’s Quote
Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the
Sounds simple but it has been occurring for centuries and it happened again here in HISD. Thank you HISD staff for being a part of, and helping our students change the world!
Summer Quote to Ponder:
Don't limit a child to your own learning, for he was born in another time.
Have a great summer!
